The types of Mesothelioma You Must Know

Pleural Mesothelioma

Location: Lining of the lungs (pleura)

Most common type: Accounts for about 75-80% of all mesothelioma cases.

Symptoms: Chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent cough, weight loss, and pleural effusion (fluid buildup around the lungs).


2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Location: Lining of the abdomen (peritoneum)

Second most common: Around 10-15% of cases.

Symptoms: Abdominal pain or swelling, nausea, weight loss, bowel issues, and fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites).


3. Pericardial Mesothelioma

Location: Lining of the heart (pericardium)

Very rare: Less than 1% of cases.

Symptoms: Chest pain, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, and fatigue.


4. Testicular Mesothelioma

Location: Lining around the testes (tunica vaginalis)

Extremely rare: Less than 1% of cases.

Symptoms: Swelling or lumps in the testicles, pain, or fluid buildup in the scrotum.

Subtypes Based on Cell Type

Each of the above types can be further classified based on the histological cell type:

Epithelioid: Most common and has the best prognosis.

Sarcomatoid: More aggressive and harder to treat.

Biphasic (Mixed): Contains both epithelioid and sarcomatoid cells.
